伊豆半島で水深5mより深い深度の岩場でダイビングすると、カラフルなシダの様な生き物に遭遇することがあります。ヒトデ、ウニ、ナマコと同じ棘皮動物のウミシダです。体の中央に本体があります。動かすことのできる触手が5本あり、その触手から枝分かれし100本以上になることもあります。この触手で流れてきたプランクトンを補食して生きています。

無防備なウミシダは敵に襲われた時,触手を自切して生き残ろうとします。触切り口は1日に1mm未満の長さで再生できます。棘皮動物のナマコやヒトデに脳は存在しませんがウミシダには小さな脳が存在します。自切できるのは脳があるからと考えられます。
