The body of the Striated frogfish (Antennarius striatus) is round like a ball, so it lives on the ocean floor without moving much, waiting for prey to approach. The body color of this fish is yellow or brownish-orange, but there are also green, gray, brown, white, and black individuals.Some individuals also have striped patterns. They also mimic the surrounding corals and sponges and wait patiently for prey such as small fish to approach.

カエルアンコウの体はだんごの様に丸いので、海底であまり動かずに生活し獲物が近づいてくるのを待つ生活スタイルです。この魚の体色は黄色や茶色がかった橙色のほか、緑色、灰色、茶色、白色、黒色の個体も存在します。また周囲のサンゴやカイメンに擬態し小魚などの獲物が近づくのをじっと待ちます。

カエルアンコウは人間の様に釣りをします。この魚は頭部の擬餌体を生物のように小刻みに動かして獲物を引き付けます。獲物が近づくと口を普段より大きく開け、0.006秒という速さで獲物を水ごと吸い込みます。捕食する時、口を広げるだけでなく、胃も広げることで自身の2倍の大きさの獲物でも捕食することができます。このようにこの魚は貪欲な肉食魚で、目の前の獲物をすべて食べようとします。

またイザリウオは20cm～10cmくらいの大きさですから、大型捕食者を避けるためにイソギンチャクやウニなどに擬態するベイツ型擬態を行こともあります。ベイツ型擬態は本来無害な種が捕食者による攻撃を免れるために、有害な種(ウニなど)に自らを似せるという生物の擬態の一様式です。

カエルアンコウは以前はイザリウオと呼ばれていました。2007年日本魚類学会はイザリウオをカエルアンコウに改名しました。「イザリ」は足の動かない人を指す差別用語だからです。カエルアンコウの特徴は魚なのに泳がないでヒレを使って歩きます。その姿がイザル（地面をはう様に歩く）ように見えたのでしょう。
