As we grow older, our teeth gradually weaken, and hard foods become more difficult to chew. Many people have experienced this and may even wish they had teeth as strong as iron so they could bite into anything without worry.
In the natural world, however, there are creatures that truly possess “metallic teeth.” Gastropods such as snails and limpets use a structure called the radula—a ribbon-like membrane lined with countless tiny teeth—to scrape food off rocks.
Among them, the small limpet often found on rocky shores is known as the only gastropod with teeth that actually contain iron.
When I once kept various marine animals in an aquarium, a limpet accidentally found its way inside. A few days later, I noticed clear traces along the glass wall where the limpet had moved. It had scraped the glass with its radula, leaving visible marks.
Recent studies have revealed that the limpet’s microscopic teeth are made from a “hybrid material” combining organic substances with metal. In particular, they contain ultrafine nanofibers composed of goethite, an extremely hard mineral, giving the teeth a strength that ranks among the highest found in nature.
Unfortunately, humans cannot grow metal teeth. That is why daily dental care is all the more important.
鉄の歯を持つ生き物たち──カサガイが教えてくれる“最強の歯”の秘密
歳を重ねると歯が弱くなり、硬いものが食べにくくなる──そんな悩みを抱える人は少なくありません。もし鉄のように強い歯を持っていたら、どんな食べ物でも気にせず噛めるのに……そう思うこともありますよね。
ところが、生き物の世界には本当に“金属の歯”を持つ種が存在します。巻貝やカタツムリが使う歯舌（しぜつ）は、リボン状の膜に小さな歯がびっしり並んだ独特の構造で、岩に付いた餌を削り取るための道具です。その中でも、磯で見かける小さなカサガイは、巻貝の仲間で唯一、鉄を含む歯を持つ生物として知られています。 かつて水槽で海の生き物を飼っていたとき、誤ってカサガイが紛れ込んだことがありました。数日後、水槽のガラス面には、カサガイが移動した跡がくっきり残っていたのです。なんと、歯舌でガラスを削ってしまったのでした。 近年の研究で、カサガイの微小な歯は有機物と金属が組み合わさった“ハイブリッド材料”でできていることが明らかになっています。特に、針鉄鉱という非常に硬い鉱物からなる極細のナノ繊維が含まれており、その強度は自然界でもトップクラスです。 残念ながら、人間はこうした金属の歯を持つことはできません。だからこそ、日々の歯のケアがとても大切になってくるのです。
