Remoras attach themselves to large fish hosts for transportation. This offers several advantages. Remoras can feed on the host’s leftover food and are protected from attacks by other larger fish. Furthermore, since the host handles the remora’s own movement, it expends relatively little energy.

Conversely, if the remora moves forward, the septa will bend back to their original position, causing the sucker cup to detach from the surface. This structure of the sucker cup allows remoras to easily attach to and detach from large fish.
